Reminder — for February 26, read the Intro to the Deloria book, AND. MORE IMPORTANT, READ the ATHLETICS chapter, pp 109 to 135
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
— What is the definition of “stereotype”, as Philip Deloria uses it here? See top of pg 9 in Introduction.
Why does he preface the definition with the white expectation of “savagery”?
— Re Page 123, How can “even the ideal of sportsmanship” … “be read as acceptance of conquest” — as Deloria puts it? Explain. Do you agree?
— Reread pp 130 bottom paragraph through first paragraph of 131. “.. sporting audiences …found community and commonality in spectatorship.” Then what happened? How did expectations change, by whites and Indians?
What did you take away from this chapter on
ATHLETICS?
